As a bit of an intro, I’ve been working as an illustrator for just shy of two years, and it’s been a real learning experience. There’s a lot I didn’t know, and a lot I didn’t realize would come in handy. I really love illustration and my fellow illustrators, and so I thought it would be nice to provide a little resource of what I have learned and will figure out in the upcoming future.

TRADE SECRETS is just that; a resource. One part work diary, one part advice column, I’m going to put forward what I know to help others. I often get asked about promotion, so I’ll give my two cents on that, as well as finances. I’ll provide resources of companies I’ve found to help with making certain items. In addition I hope to get more people into the fun either by guest blogging or interviews– I figure that learning together will help us all get a little sharper.

If you’re interested in taking part, please drop me a line, or if you have general questions I can help answer or find an answer to, that’ll work just as dandy.

Till then!

Just discovered trade secrets through Illustration Mundo and it’s brilliant. I am a recent graduate illustrator starting out from England and all the help I can find at the moment is valuable. If there is any way I can get involved please let me know.

    Keep up the good work.
    Best Wishes x x

I love your site! I just started a blog on my own site, with a similar bent — sometimes promotional stuff, sometimes advice and tutorials, sometimes other people’s work that inspires me.

As a freelancer who’s been in the biz for twenty years, I can hopefully give you some advice. But I’m as much in the dark about a lot of it as you are, and I’m sure you’ll have ideas and solutions I won’t have thought of. That’s the beauty of sharing with colleagues.

You’re on my RSS feed — I hope you’ll want to add me to yours. Or bookmark, or whatever. You get the idea! Thanks for adding to the general dialogue by starting your own forum.

    Hi

Do you know how to get the kind of “skippy” , inky lines that William Steig was able to get ? On the same note, the early drawing of Andy Warhol (shoes, cats, etc) are made with equally exciting lines…..any suggestions ? I am a painter, yet I lean heavily on drawing. I need to make lines like these guys ! HELP ! Thanks oxox Suzanne
